[Korea] Recommended destinations around the DMZ

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has selected four travel destinations around the DMZ that highlight the well-preserved ecological environments of Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do.

One of four sites on the list is the Wetland Protected Area (Bukhangang River) in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do. The site has been remained well preserved for over 50 years, making it a sanctuary for rare plants species, as well as animals such as otters, musk deer, and long-tailed gorals. Tourist attractions near Hwacheon-gun include Hwachon Bimok Park and the Peace Dam.

The county of Cheorwon in Gangwon-do is home to many eco-friendly attractions. Goseokjeong National Tourist Area is considered as one of the most scenic spots in Cheorwon because of the dramatic cliffs and valleys of the Hantangang River. Other attractions along the Hantangang River include Jiktang Falls and Sundam Valley.

At Dutayeon Valley in Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do, visitors can enjoy the cool breeze coming from cool waterfalls and interesting rocks formations. In addition, visitors can catch a glimpse of animals such as lenoks (also known as Asiatic trout), or rare plants such as dicentra (also known as bleeding heart) flowers. Other famous tourist sites in Yanggu-gun include the Yanggu Eco-Botanical Garden, Center of Korea Observatory and Punch Bowl.

Yeoncheon-gun in Gyeonggi-do offers a spectacular view of the jusangjeolli (hexagonal pillars formed by columnar jointing) cliff located at the meeting point of the Imjingang River and Hantangang River. The cliff is 40 meters high and 1 kilometer long, making it an awe-inspiring sight. Near the area is Godaesan Mountain, which overlooks the northern part of Gyeonggi-do.
