[Korea] Jinju Lantern Festival Lights Up the October Nights

The Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival 2013*, designated as this year’s most representative festival of Korea, will take place at the area around Namgang River in Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, from October 1 to 13.

This festival is well-known for its spectacular display of lights from the thousands of lanterns. Festival highlights include the lantern parade, hanging wish lanterns, a stunning fireworks show over the river, and setting wish lanterns afloat on the Namgang River. In addition, there will be various exhibits featuring Korean relics, lifestyle of ancestors from 400 years ago, cartoon characters, and world-famous institutions and customs.

This October, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival will light up Jinju’s night sky and Namgang River with a colorful display of lanterns to provide visitors with a memorable experience.

*Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival: The festival was first held as a memorial event to pay tribute to around 70,000 soldiers who lost their lives at Jinjuseong Fortress during the Imjin Waeran, the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. The festival is now widely-known as the Jinju Namgang Yudeng (Lantern) Festival.
