[Korea] Gansong Art Museum’s Spring Exhibition Begins May 12

Gansong Art Museum houses some of the country’s rarest antiquities and will be open to the public for its spring exhibition entitled “Pyoam and Korean Southern School Paintings of the Joseon Dynasty” in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul-si from May 12 to 26.

This year’s spring exhibition celebrates the 300-year anniversary of the birth of painter Pyoam, born Gang Se-hwang. Approximately 90 works of art derived from the Korean Southern School of the Joseon Era will be on display, including works by Lee Gwang-sa and Sim Sa-jeong in addition to Pyoam. This particular painting style of the Joseon Dynasty conveys the distinct characteristics of smooth brushstrokes and a feeling of loneliness.

Gansong Art Museum is closed all year and opens to the public only for biannual two-week exhibitions that take place in May and October. This collection of national treasures is the lifelong work of founder Jeon Hyeong-pil. Admission is free of charge.

*Who is Pyoam, and what is the Korean Southern School of the Joseon Dynasty?
Gang Sehwang, whose pseudonym is “Pyoam,” was a great master of the Korean Southern School of the Joseon Dynasty. Pyoam was part of a group of amateur artists, typically with a scholarly background, that created Chinese Southern School-influenced art that was popular in the late Joseon Dynasty.
