Mudeungsan Provincial Park, a popular mountain in Gwangju, was recently upgraded to a national park, the 21st in Korea.
Since it was designated as a provincial park in May, 1972, Mudeungsan has been loved by both domestic and international tourists because of its beautiful scenery and pristine natural environment. The status of the mountain was upgraded to a National Park thanks to its high value of natural resource. 2,296 species of animals and plants including 8 endangered species inhabit the mountain. Also at the park are 2 treasures, 16 cultural heritages, and 61 places popular for superb natural landscapes including Jusangjeolli Cliff, which are rock pillars formed during a volcanic eruption.
Mudeungsan will reopen as the 21st national park of Korea and will hold an opening ceremony in March.
