[Korea] Korean Movies Set Domestic Viewership Record in 2012

Domestic viewership for Korean movies surpassed 100 million on November 20th. The number beat the previous record set in 2006 and is expected to reach 110 million by the end of the year. Two movies attracted more than 10 million viewers and 9 movies attracted more than 4 million viewers, all being major contributors to the current record. The Thieves, directed by Choi Dong Hun and released in July, 2012, did especially well, attracting 12.98 million domestic viewers and is currently ranked second behind 2006’s The Host (13.01 million) for the all time highest domestic viewership.

Besides The Thieves, Gwanghae: The Man Who Became King, A Werewolf Boy, Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time, Architecture 101, All About My Wife, The Grand Heist(바람과 함께 사라지다), Dancing Queen, and Deranged (연가시) were among the most watched movies this year.

The success of Korean movies this year can be a seen as the fruit of the labors put forth by those in the Korean movie industry as well as the love and support from fans both home and abroad.
