Seoul Metropolitan Office conducted an online survey at its homepage (www.seoul.go.kr) from June 20th to July 3rd under the theme of ‘Hallyu Story in Seoul’.
The survey, conducted for 2,800 people (2,474 foreign visitors and 326 locals), asked which Seoul landmarks, Hallyu stars, and genres best represented Hallyu and Seoul.
The best place in Seoul that can represent Hallyu was N Seoul Tower, while Myeongdong, Bukchon Hanok Village, Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul Plaza, and Gyeongbokgung Palace were also recognized as places that can promote Hallyu. The story genre that best represents Hallyu is a love story, followed by drama, romantic comedy, comedy, and suspense/mystery.
Most international respondents picked Park Yu-cheon, Lee Min-ho, and Kim Su-hyeon to be the Hallyu actors who they think can best promote Seoul, for such reasons as ‘he’s handsome, has a gentle image, is goal-oriented, has great acting and singing’. Locals, on the other hand, selected Girls Generation, Lee Byung-hyun, and Kim Jeong-hun as the ones who can best represent Seoul, largely because they are ‘well-known worldwide for their drama and music’ and ‘they are beautiful’.
The survey questions were as follows:
1. Among all Korean (Hallyu) actors/actresses (or singers), who do you think can best represent Seoul? Please state the name of the actor/actress (or singer – solo or group).
2. Which part of Seoul can best promote Hallyu?
3. If you are writing a story (or making a drama or music video) with the actor/actress and the place you chose in the questions above, which genre would that be?
