Every autumn, the cities of Buyeo and Gongju in Chungcheongnam-do, home to the ancient Baekje Kingdom, play host to the Baekje Cultural Festival. This year, the Baekje Cultural Festival is scheduled to take place from September 26 through October 5.
The festival is a tribute to the Baekje Dynasty, which occupied the region for nearly 700 years and engaged in active exchanges with China and Japan. Marking its 60th anniversary this 2014, the Baekje Cultural Festival will be held under the theme of "Baekje! Meets the World" and offer about 70 diverse programs embodying Baekje's great culture.
The 2014 Baekje Cultural Festival’s major highlights include the nation’s largest night parade called “Foreign Relations of Great Baekje Parade”; the “Spirit of Baekje, Media Façade Show” which tells the story of Baekje; and a falconry demonstration, which has been designated as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The festival will kick off with an opening ceremony on September 26 (Fri) from 16:30 to 19:00 at Baekje Cultural Land while the closing ceremony will be held from 18:30 to 20:30 on October 5 (Sun) at the main event stage of Singwan Park in Gongju.
Currently the biggest of its kind in Korea, the "Foreign Relations of Great Baekje Parade" is a reenactment of the parade of envoys from China and Japan who came to pay tribute to the King of Baekje. The parade will be taking place in Buyeo on September 27 & 28, and in Gongju on October 3 & 4.
