With winter quickly approaching, Gangwon-do is busy in preparation for winter festivals due to kick off January of next year.
Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival will take place from January 5 to 27 in Hwacheon-gun. Visitors can enjoy ice fishing for sancheoneo (cherry salmon) through a hole drilled into a 2-meter deep frozen river. A total of 120,000 holes will be drilled to accommodate a large number of visitors; fish can be seen swimming underneath the ice, allowing even those who are new to ice fishing anticipate a catch. A shuttle bus will be running between Seoul and the festival venue for foreigners.
Inje Icefish Festival, another popular winter festival, will take place for ten days, from January 19 to 27. Celebrating its 19th anniversary, the venue for the upcoming year’s festival will be at the Inje Bingeoho Lake near the upper stream of Soyangho Lake. The event venue will provide themed activity zones for ultimate fun, such as the hunting ground, snow and ice playground, rest area, mountain village, ice competition zone, food zone, and more.
