Lotus Lantern Festival will light up the Seoul nights starting May 11. To celebrate the birth of Buddha, a festival will be held along the streets of Jongno, and especially at Jogyesa Temple. Designated National Intangible Heritage No. 122, the Buddhist event attracts people of all religion with large scale lantern parade and activities.

This year’s Yeon Deung Hoe will hold a Celebration Lighting Ceremony at Gwanghwamun Square on April 25, but the main event, the Exhibition of Traditional Lanterns, will be held from May 11-22. With the theme of Buddha, bell, crane, and lotus, the lanterns will be displayed at Jogyesa Temple, Bongeunsa Temple, and Cheongyecheon Stream.

Traditional performance of Hoehyang Hanmadang will be shown under the rain of flowers on the evening of May 12, while exciting performances can be seen at Traditional Cultural Events and Yeondeungnori on May 13.

Foreigner Only events are also planned. Designated seats to watch the Grand Lotus Lantern Parade as well as participate in the parade are available for reservation. For more hand-on experience, visitors can also participate in making their own lantern. The events are first reserve, first served basis and can request for a reservation until April 27 at Yeon Deung Hoe official website’s Notice Board.

Take away the pain and darkness with soft lighting of the lanterns. Enjoy Yeon Deung Hoe and rejuvenate your soul with hopes this May.
