Korail, the Korea Railroad Corporation, announced that it will operate a special “DMZ-Train” tour that will run between Seoul Station and Dorasan Station, the closest train station to 38th parallel, which marks the most heavily militarized border in the world. The reopening of the lines will begin May 4, when the first train is scheduled to leave from Seoul Station.

The DMZ-Train allows tourists to travel through Korea’s untouched natural landscape and historical landmark that is the Korean Demilitarized Zone. This will mark the first time in 6 years that the DMZ-Train will resume operation. Since the station is within the Civilian Control Zone (CCZ), tourists will only be granted access after presenting a valid form of identification and filling out an application form.

The DMZ-Train is made up of 3 compartments in total with exterior signage reading “Peace, Freedom and Unity” on each car. The lead car’s design inspiration came from a rusty steam locomotive, conjuring up images of hope and memories of the past. The other two cars represent “Freedom and Unity” and are decorated with the national flower Mugunghwa.

The train will run twice a day and tickets are available at each station. Tourists can also purchase a “DMZ Plus Ticket” which lets you freely board and depart at any of the stations along the way. The DMZ Plus Ticket comes with special offers like discounted admission to tourist attractions in Seoul.
