Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mount Trout) Ice Festival 2014, one of Korea’s major winter festivals, will take place from January 4 to 26 around Hwacheoncheon Stream and five other areas in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do.
Mountain trout can be found in clean, cold waters, swimming quickly and vigorously below a 30cm-thick layer of ice. At the festival, visitors drill a hole through the ice to catch mountain trout on the frozen river. They can then bring their catch to cooking centers around the site and have it stewed, grilled, or raw.
The festival also features activities such as ice sledding, bobsledding, ice climbing, and other fun things to do with your family or loved ones this winter.
*Sancheoneo: a type of freshwater fish belonging to the Salmonidae family. Although similar in many features, sancheoneo is actually less than half the length of trout. Sacheoneo are usually found in Korea, Japan and Alaska, living in the upper stream of the river where the water is clean and abundant in oxygen.
