The Goesan Red Pepper Festival
2013, one of the representative local festivals of Goesan-gun, will take place along Dongjincheon River in Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, from September 5 to 8.
Known as an area where red peppers have been cultivated since the Joseon Dynasty, the county of Goesan is regarded as a major producer of high quality red peppers in Korea. Koreans generally like hot, spicy foods, so red pepper is an indispensable ingredient in many dishes. Now in its 11th year, the festival has numerous programs, including wide display of red peppers from all over the world, a red pepper food exhibit, red-pepper picking, free sampling of bibimbap with red pepper sauce, traditional Korean cultural experience programs (craft-making and dyeing), and many more.
There will also be a red pepper eating contest, a fireworks show, pungdeung-flying (releasing lanterns into the sky), water-themed activities and performances (b-boying and gugak). Admission to the festival is free.
