Gangneung Danoje Festival, one of the intangible cultural heritages designated by UNESCO, will take place at areas around Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung-si Gangwon-do from June 9 to 16, 2013.
Gangneung Danoje is a traditional ancestral ceremony that has been celebrated since the Three Kingdoms era until today. The festival is held in the city of Ganeung during Dano* (the 5th day of the 5th month on the lunar calendar). The cultural uniqueness and remarkable artistic qualities of Gangneung Danoje, Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 13, were acknowledged by UNESCO and it was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 25th 2005. The festival not only serves a channel to transmit traditional culture but also as venue for the citizens to get together and enjoy the festivities. This year has prepared 69 different programs from 10 different categories for the visitors to take part in.
The Gangneung Danoje Festvial 2013 will provide visitors with a lot of special and unique experiences this June. Admission to the festival is free.
*Dano is a Korean traditional holiday that falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. To chase away bad energy, women wash their hair in water infused with sweet grass, while the men wore the acorus root around their waists on that day.
