The Hapcheon Hwangmaesan Royal Azalea Festival will kick off on May 14 and run until the 24th at Hwangmaesan County Park in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do.
Hwangmaesan Mountain peaks at 1108 meters, putting it among the nation’s tallest mountains. It is also known for having the largest field of royal azaleas in South Korea. In May of each year, royal azaleas cover the terrain almost completely, painting the whole mountain pink and creating a magnificent sight. The festival starts with a ceremony to wish for prosperity and abundance for the town’s inhabitants. Various events are staged including face painting, concerts, kite flying (using “hope” kites), and more. Visitors can enjoy delicious local foods and local specialty crops.
With spring in full swing, the festival is the perfect opportunity to take a break from busy city and enjoy the beauty of nature.
