A unique festival of fish and fun, the 2012 Yangyang Salmon Festival (held at the Namdaecheon Stream area in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do) is a two-fold festival that combines a weekend of official events (Oct 20-21) with an extra weekend of fishing grabbing (Oct 27-28).
The festival, which celebrates its 16th anniversary this year, is popular among both the local and international communities, with foreigner nationals making up about 20% of the festival’s total attendees.
Official events (held Oct 20-21) include: Yongwangje (a ritual praying for a good harvest, a good catch, and the well-being of residents), a program in which participants try to catch salmon with their bare hands, and a variety of other fish-related programs. On the weekend of October 27 and 28, only the bare-handed salmon-catching program will be offered, giving you a second chance to snag a fish.
Admission to the festival venue is free of charge, but the ever-popular fish program costs 25,000 won for adults and 20,000 for children. Book your spot in advance by calling one of the numbers below or sign-up onsite at the festival venue.
