  • The human mind is unique, in that people love the convenience of the city life
where they can communicate quickly with their smartphones every day,
and food is delivered to their front doors with just a few clicks on their devices,
but at the same time, they sometimes want to escape to nature where there are no traces of people,
tall buildings, or sounds from their phones.

There is a recommended tourist destination for those looking for a place where high-rise buildings
or even convenience stores cannot be easily found, all while retaining its natural appearance.
It is Taean, where the West Sea and green forests harmonize to provide a magnificent visual feast.

Taean is a tourist attraction where you can release the everyday stress weighing you down while staying amid nature.
There are no high-rise buildings blocking the view or fumes of cars occupying the roads.
Among them, I headed to the Byulgung Pension,
a Korea Quality (KQ)-certified accommodation located closest to the sea.

Byulgung Pension, with Elegant Hanok embroidering the Coast of Taean,
    as beautiful as a constellation.

Byulgung Pension is a KQ-certified accommodation in which 12 single hanok (traditional Korean house) buildings,
named after the constellation, are clustered in a huddle like a village.
Thanks to its location on the northeastern tip of Taean,
you can best enjoy the colorful charm of the West Sea here, which changes its face depending on the ebb and flow.
In Byulgung, offering rooms for two to seven people, you will be welcomed warmly by the management team,
who presents an impression beyond kindness.

It has a slightly raised pavilion, where you can watch the surrounding small farmland
and the lovely rural landscape, and the rest area,
where you can enjoy the “mulmeong (spacing out while staring at water)”
in front of the small pond and the West Sea at the same time, is also especially good.
The sound of the wind tickling your ears, the chirping of mountain birds,
and the sound of waves from afar are all you can hear in the place.
Here, you can find peace when you realize that you are completely away from the noises you hear in the city.

It is too soon even for visitors, who find the sudden silence somehow unfamiliar, to be disappointed.
However, Byulgung Pension has tools that allow guests to experience the tidal flats.
They also operate an outdoor barbecue area and a public swimming pool, so you will not run out of things to enjoy.
Moreover, Kkujinamugol Beach and Mallipo Beach are also located nearby,
which are good places to go for a swim.

Ask nature and learn from the ancestors.

Guest Rooms Built in an Environment-Friendly Traditional Method

I have entered the Ssangjagung (May) guest room facing the sea.
Its size is good for two people to stay comfortably, and the ceiling is higher than it looks,
so the open space gives you a somewhat cool impression.
All guest rooms, including the Ssangjagung, have been built in the traditional methods of the ancestors,
in which the room harmonizes with nature.
The frame of the hanok, such as rafters, columns, floors, and beams, is first erected,
and then the walls are built with red clay and rice straw,
so you get the feeling that the whole house is breathing.

The meticulousness of Byulgung, showing careful consideration of those who stay, can be seen everywhere,
including the neatly folded duvet that smells of cotton fiber, the ocean view through the window,
the room’s interior equipped with all the necessary modern tools, the bathroom, and the kitchen.
All of this adds to the lingering impression of the stay.
With assistance from the staff, guiding guests on things to enjoy
and constantly checking how they are doing using a soothing voice,
it feels like a relaxation like no other.

A Dining Table of One Meal Made with Fresh Seafood from Taean

    Ttanttuk Tongnamujip

Ttanttuk Tongnamujip serves a single dining table filled with rare seafood dishes,
including marinated crab made with fresh crab and secret seasoning,
pork backbone stew, napa cabbage soup, spicy fish stew,
crab and kimchi stew, and soy sauce marinated shrimp.
It is already a popular must-visit restaurant in Taean.
Various kinds of side dishes are also carefully prepared by hand.

As I sat by the window and watched the students going home through the rice fields,
I noticed no one had a smartphone in their hand,
and they were all striding boldly across, looking straight ahead.
This in contrast with the city, where people are always hunched over and bowed down to stare into their phones.
This scenery of Taean, where nobody bows down except for the ripened rice in the paddy fields, is indeed lovely.
    With this simple countryside scenery,
let’s enjoy a meal like a king by squeezing plenty of marinated crab on top of the freshly cooked rice.

Happy June, a café that Supports the Eternal Green of Taean

Happy June café has a fantastic ocean view with the West Sea spreading right out the window.
For those who plan to visit Padori Beach, it is a recommended place to stop by at least once and take a rest.
It couldn’t be better to just watch the sea while eating desserts,
such as dacquoise and crumble, or drinking a special coffee with floating petals.
The good practice of environmental protection,
such as selling reusable cups made of eco-friendly materials, is also notable here.

If you’re traveling with pets, there’s something you’ll love here.
Happy June is a café where pets can enter,
so it’s also perfect for taking a break with your precious pets while enjoying a walk along the beach.

Chollipo Arboretum, the Oldest Arboretum where You can Enjoy the Color
    and Abundance of Nature’s Beauty

Chollipo Arboretum is an arboretum established at the Cheollipo seaside
by Doctor Min Byeong-gal (Dr. Carl Ferris Miller), who is a naturalized Korean citizen from America.
In August 1996, it was registered as a public interest foundation
with the Korea Forest Service to prove the value of Korean plants to the world
by conducting comparative research of Korean plants and overseas plants
and to protect our plant resources and use them as educational materials for people.

Chollipo Arboretum, which boasts a vast scale of 57.93 hectares,
maintains its green appearance all year round as the entire site is filled with various plants.
The flowers blooming in each season and the superb view of Cheollipo seaside are in fine harmony.
Enjoy the beautiful scenery presented by the mild climate of Taean all year round
and enjoy the arboretum full of phytoncide.
You won’t feel exhausted, but happy instead,
realizing that nature awaits to embrace you wherever you go.

    Nature alone is good enough.

Although luxurious guest rooms, splendid contents and bustling crowds, restaurants with long wait lines,
and noisy tourist attractions are what you might seek to experience in a valuable and exciting trip, that’s not everything.
While Taean has only nature to offer, its appearance is good and perfect as is.
In fact, the crashing waves of the West Sea, seem to ask you to let go of all your worries, and this is more than enough.
Maybe travel which offers nature alone is indeed good enough.
