Introduction

Located about 700m northwest of the Oksanseowon Confucian Academy, Dongnakdang is the old house of Lee Eon-jeok, a renowned scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. Situated on a stream beneath Hwagaesan Mountain, this hanok is composed of the Dongnakdang and Gyejeong buildings, which were used as living quarters and a study. While Dongnakdang is the name of the Sarangchae, or men's quarters, it also refers to the entire house. Surrounded by 'Sasan Odae,' or four mountain peaks and five rocks in the valley, the hanok was built on a low stone platform on low-lying ground. The wooden floors and the roof were also built relatively low. A unique feature of the hanok is that a part of the fence was replaced with a wooden lattice window, so one could see the stream from the wood-floored hall.
